An Excuse to Drink and Drive Posted by Em & Wippa 30 July, 2008 - 8:17 AM

Struggling to get home on a Friday and Saturday? Sick of waiting over an hour for a taxi and you've missed the last bus/train? Do you think Perth's lack of Taxi's and decent public transport is giving peope an excuse to drink and drive?

I blame the lack of decent local pubs, I have to walk for over half an hour to my local pub and its an absolute hole (I live in Spearwood). so if I want to go some where nice I have to travel to Freo or further. This makes it very hard to get home after midnight and often we end up staying in and buying from the bottle O. C'mon perth landlords sort your pubs out they are terrible!

I agree with Darren Perth's local pubs are absolute dog turd. That why we have to go in to town which puts more pressure on taxi's and public transport. If only we could follow Melbourne lead...

I don't drink but can't drive and those taxi ranks are scary places once to pubs close. The state government is really giving us bad service in this area. GET IT SORTED ALAN!!!

Poor locals, not enough taxi's are all factors we have to deal with, i agree it sucks. But i don't think they are valid excuses to drink and drive. people need to be responsible and plan ahead. Have a designated driver or pre book a taxi.

Regardless of whether Perth has no taxi's at all, I don't think it is ever an excuse to drink and drive.

Last year, my boyfriend Jason went to pick up his sister late on Saturday night after she broke down on the way back from the movies. He parked well in the emergency lane and was walking the short distance to his sisters car when a drunk driver in a 4wd without his headlights on hit him doing about 110km/hr on Tonkin Hwy.

Jason was thrown over the car, breaking many bones in his body. The car didn't stop.

Even worse is because they didn't know their exact position on Tonkin Hwy, the ambulance wouldn't come and pick him up. His sister, who had only gotten her licence a few days before, had to drive him to the hospital. When driving, they saw a 4wd pulled over about 10 minutes up the road, with a drunk man stumbling around his car examining the damage. They told him to come to the hospital.

Jason now has his elbow held together by metal, a major bone missing from his leg - as well as a lot of muscle - and is lucky to be alive. He is still undertaking serious surgery a year later.

The police have failed to take action. The drunk driver showed up at the hospital after several hours, so it is not classed as a hit and run. They have recently caught him for drink driving again, and he was not charged for either.

Jason is now classed as permanently disabled, and cannot move his left arm. He is in constant pain.

Drink driving is never an option. Take turns with your friends to drive.

About 2 weeks ago my friend, who's a repeat offender, drove home from the casino drunk. His friend wanted to get home because he was sick and they got pulled over. The cops took a breath test, he blew 3 times over the limit and let him go because he was just trying to look after his friend!!!!!! aren't they worried about the other innocent people he might kill!!! I was disgusted when he came running through the house that night drunk to tell us how he got let off.

Just because there are no taxi's in Perth is an absolute disgrace to use as an excuse for drink driving. I have been known to travel to Northbridge from Mandurah because I care enough about my loved ones to pick up and take them home. As have many of my friends. I am disgusted to hear it so commonly used as an excuse.

Have we forgot about the wonders of the designated drivers?
