The Snip or Tubes Tied! Who should get "fixed"? Posted by Em 17 September, 2008 - 8:58 AM

The Snip

Scotty and I had a tough talk last night. It was the one you don't really think about until it's necessary, who should get "fixed" when the time comes? Medically I can only have one more child and then after that my abdominal wall won't be able to take any more, I have tried all types of birth control and unfortunately my body rejects it all. That leaves us in a tough spot, do I get my tubes tied after the next child or does Scotty get the snip? He really doesn't want to and neither do I and we'd never force the other to do it so what do we do? I'd love top hear your stories and opinions if you have been in the same situation, or even if you haven't!

well em, i have had 2 c sections and the doctors tell me i can only have 3. In my case i would get fixed, i see it as if i can't have any more children to my husband then i can't have children to any one else so i would rather me get it don't so if anything does happen and we split then he would be able to have other children later.

    good luck

Em, I tried to call but you were obviously inundated with calls on this topic. We have 2 kids, I was over popping the pill every day and no way would my husband have the 'snip' - it was up to me! I sat on the referral for 6 months before I went in to be 'clamped'. Now, take notice of this - 7 months later, I WAS PREGNANT! The doctor (who was totally uncaring about the whole thing) told me that he had placed the clamps where it was a 1 in 300 chance of me falling pregnant, but it would be easier to reverse the procedure. After much anguish (over Xmas and my son's birthday), I decided to terminate and have my tubes re-clamped. Now there is apparently a 1 in 1000 chance of me getting pregnant. As you would probably realise, this was a horrific time for me. We hadn't wanted any more kids because of the financial burden (we were actually losing our house at the time), plus I have a minor prolapse of the uterus which I didn't want to aggravate further.

If it is you who decides to take the 'sterilisation' step, just make sure you know all the facts first. I wouldn't wish the emotional trauma on anybody else. Best of luck with whatever decision you and Scotty make.

Hey Em.. the decision you are about to make is one i made myself some 10 years ago when pregnant with my daughter. I was only 25 and had already had 2 sons( 6 & 3) both by c section and the birth of my daughter would make c section number three.. my husband (now an ex one) wouldn't get the snip, adamant no one was touching the family jewels. I made the decision and got my tubes tied seeing i was already going under the knife to have a c section, it took 9 months of asking the DR to perform it...because of my then age he wasn't keen on doing it but i was adamant there would be no more kids...yes by 25 i knew i didn't want anymore no matter what the situation. Even thou now single its still not a decision i will ever regret making.

I take it none of you have heard of condoms? Good invention, been around for ages and no one has to get cut open. You can get them free from the family planning clinic and they can be a lot fun... just a thought

My partner and i have 3 children aged 6, 3 and 9 months and after the last one he had the snip, best idea he was done in 20 mins. We both agreed that it was best for him to get done as i had already put my body through enough and he is 40years old and i am 30 and i do not want to poison my body with contraception for the next 20 years or so. he agreed that is was best for my body to stay natural!, he didnt really want the snip and said it wasnt really nice but agreed it was best for me. And now we dont have to worry at all. I am very lucky he took my wellbeing into consideration when making this dececion.

Hi Em, Yes I decided at 33 years old and 2 children that I would get my tubes tied, I thought I had a happy marriage and he didn't want anymore kids. 5 yrs later my husband left for freedom purposes and within 3 months his new girlfriend fell pregnant. My words to him as he left were, you better get the snip, he laughed.

After having three children whilst using contraception (Pill, Condoms, combination of both and Depro injections) I decided to use an implant. This was disastrous as I had a total loss of libido which really affected our relationship. My partner and I discussed removing it and for him to have the snip. Being nearly 40 we both felt this was a good decision! All went well right up until it came time to make the referral appointment. Long story short... My partner made the decision that faced with the possibility of no more children ever, he actually wanted another child!!! So now I am nearly six months pregnant and hoping this will be the last one.
