Four Straight Women Who Act Like Gay Men Posted by Em 4 June, 2008 - 5:54 PM

SATC

I remember very clearly one episode of "The Simpsons" in which Sex and the City was parodied as "Nookie in New York". Patty and Selma were watching it and described it as "a show about four straight women who act like gay men". I laughed at the time and thought it was a pretty astute comment.

After having seen the movie I have changed my mind a little but on the Patty and Selma comment, there are quite a few new dimensions added to each of the characters. A more nurturing and maternal quality to their friendships that we didn't see a lot of in the series.

There is a particularly touching moment between Carrie and Samantha that still makes me teary just thinking about it, I'm not sure any of my gays would be as patient or gentle in the same situation.

My female friends are all very dear to me, however we certainly don't sit around discussing male genitalia and fashion. If I turn my attention to my three best friends Lyndon, Alec and Ryan (who all call themselves my children's aunties) I can reveal we absolutely talk about men, clothes and celebrity. However they are not the most sympathetic bunch! During one of my break ups many years ago I was ordered to pop on some hot pants have a drink and get over it! Ryan is like Samantha - not afraid to share himself around, outrageous and witty. Alec is like Miranda very professional and trustworthy with a killer wit and Lyndon is Charlotte glamorous and conservative with a flash of naughtiness.

So I've decided I think Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte are the best of the gays mixed with the best of what women bring to relationships. I think if we could all have that kind of closeness, trust and attention to fashion in our lives the world would be a much better place!

Let us turn our attention to the movie. As a devout and loyal Sex And The City fan I can tell you I felt absolutely satisfied with how the movie ended. I loved it, will it change my life? Probably not but what I loved was being with the girls again, the absolute feast for my eyes fashion wise and Sarah Jessica Parkers ability to make me turn the light inwards a little and evaluate my own life.

There are a couple of scenes that took my breath away; we've all felt at least once in our lives the wide spectrum of emotions that are explored in the film. The morning after a break up with the love of your life and you've look in the bathroom mirror to find a shattered wreck. Seeing a friend in so much pain you'd do anything to take it away, this film does not shy away from making you feel.

All in all I give it a robust 8/10 and I am going to see it again as Wippa ruined a pivotal scene for me when he asked if I felt Big look like Essendon's Matthew Lloyd..

Go with you best friend or your best gay and get swept away.

Below I will pop in some interesting scenes that were filmed but did not make the final cut. If you haven't seen the movie and are afraid you may read something that will spoil it don't read. I personally don't think they're spoilers but I don't want to make that decision for everybody!

I hope you love the movie as much as I did.

Em x

Minor Spoiler Alert!!!!!!!!

Here are the scenes that did not make the movie: (Source evilbeetgossip.film.com)

Yes, someone was meant to die: The original script for "SATC" featured the death of one of the show's characters, but, unlike tabloid speculation, it wasn't anyone in the main cast. Anne Meara, who played Steve's mom, was set to pass away in a scene meant to show that even though Steve (David Eigenberg) had cheated on Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), she still cared for him enough after their separation to visit her mother-in-law in the hospital. As for killing off any of his leading ladies, King dismissed the idea noting, "I care too much about each of these characters."

The original script would have been a much longer movie: A number of characters' story lines had to be dramatically cut, including one involving Charlotte's husband, Harry (Evan Handler), and the couple's 21-year-old nanny who seemingly never wore a bra. Christened "Erin Go Braless" by Samantha (Kim Cattrall), the character was meant to introduce a fear in Charlotte (Kristin Davis) about something happening to her (what that was wasn't revealed). Davis notes, "A couple of the things got cut time-wise. You just feel bad for the guys in our world. They're troupers about it."

Mr. Big wasn't the only flame of Carrie's to show up in the movie: With the movie "busting at the seams," King had to cut an "amazing scene" for John Corbett, who played Carrie's ex-boyfriend Aidan.

Sounds like your gay friends behave just like straight men.

If your horse kicks you off you go out and find yourself a new one and ride it till a better one comes along.

If those sex and the girls where men, this film and TV series would never have got off the ground.

It's funny how a bunch of self obsessed, consumers can be become hero's for a whole generation of women. They behave like men yet women applaud them but if it was a man doing this, women would be disgusted and in fact are.

Why people would want to aspire to be them or even compare themselves to them is beyond me.

It's funny how you separate gay men from straight men as if their minds operate differently. I have a few gay friends and the only difference from them and me is that they like men and I like women. The way we pursue them and talk about them is exactly the same, except blokes seem to be easier to pull than women. I think you need to spend a bit more time with the ladies, they really aren't that bad... honestly

Sounds to me Em like you're one of those women that are threatened by other women. Gay men can provide you with the sensitivity that a bunch of male friends can't. I have a wonderful group of girlfriends and we all honestly want the best for one another with no competition, but as you have proved that is a rare thing these days.

    Ok.. firstly on Murf's comment;
This thread originated from a quote from 'the simpsons'. As Em noted the terms gay and straight... it is merely a method of distinguishing, it wasn't a judgment and while there was some stereotyping, it was not inflammatory. It was all in good fun.

    And Melinda..
Just from your opening sentence it is already obvious that you have a superiority complex about yourself.. as if to say 'you seem like you're threatend by other women, but I'M not, I'm comfortable with myself and value my female friends.. em just sounds like she's insecure, that's why she doesn't have female friends'.

May well not be the case, but this is how it comes across. I am a guy's girl.. like Em, the majority of my friends are male.. and even they sit around and discuss male genetalia (theyre straight, the majority of them).
I am a mother of two, and I just find most women, especially those who have anything in common with me certainly don't share my warped sense of humour, and basically, I don't want to sit in a playgroup room drinking coffee while my kids and theirs beat each other up and talk about investment properties and my husbands job.. I find MOST women boring.. that simple.
