Em's Bra Bus - Why is it that women generally put themselves behind most other things in their life?
Em 3 July, 2008 - 7:55 AM
I always see immaculacy dressed children and look ten metres behind to see their bedraggled Mother in wheat bix stained trackies and yesterdays mascara.
I am guilty of this, as was my Mother and my Nana before her. I always serve Scotty and the girls dinner first and if by chance I haven’t made enough for me I’ll just lick the bowl or have the scraps Odie throws on the floor! I’m not looking for sympathy here, I know a great deal of you are reading this and thinking "you actually get to eat"?!
So it should have come as no surprise that most of us are getting around in an ill-fitting bra, almost 95% of us to be precise. I have to admit, I had no idea the statistic was that high- it shocked me a little. We spend so much money on make-up, face cream, perfume, haircuts etc and neglect and mistreat our most prominent feature.
I wanted to do the bra bus as soon as I learnt of this outrageous statistic, I have been fitted a couple of times over the years at my Mothers insistence and I found out today I have been wearing the wrong size since the last fitting! Women’s bodies fluctuate quite a lot however a lot of us cram or drown our breasts in the same size bra no matter what the rest of our body is doing.
The bus left yesterday for "The Bra Bar" in Mt Hawthorn and I must say a HUGE thank you to Jannis and the girls on doing such an amazing job. They looked at each set of breasts as their own personal challenge and set about helping us achieve exactly the bust line we were all hoping for. We had all sizes accounted for a 10a right up to an 18h and I think everyone walked away feeling a little taller/thinner/flatter/bustier and generally hotter as well.
The corsetieres were lovely, Motherly and kind with a touch of Mary Poppins thrown in! (Exactly as they should be no one wants to be fitted by a size 6 perky blonde with enormous melons that seem to mock you with ever heave of her perfectly proportioned and tanned chest….)
I found that I had been wearing too small a bra and upon putting on the right sized one a whole new world opened up. One that didn’t have my left boob being suppressed by the under wire and squirting out the size to create an unfortunate flap of skin. (too descriptive for you?!)
I cannot urge, recommend, encourage, cheer, support, advise and advocate enough that women everywhere go and have their bras professionally fitted. The other interesting thing is that your size will vary with the particular brand you pick, you may be a 14b in one and a 12c in another.
Go on ladies; spoil your girls, they deserve it.
Yours in uplifting support,
Em x

My mum was Jan, the lady that fitted Whippa for his bra. I warned her that he could sometimes be a bit rude.

She said what a great bloke he was. I think you have been putting on a front all this time Whippa and you are actually a decent guy. -

hi, i'm 21yrs. old and a mother of a gorgeous little girl. before i had this very tight tummy and was even envied for it. but after i gave birth to my daughter when i was 20, everything went the wrong way. i don't know the right bra size for me, i don't know if the clothes i'm wearing were out of style...i lost my touch on things for my self eversince i had my daughter. maybe it's because i always focus my mind on my daughter.
i mean i can't shop for myself if i have my daughter coz i'm worried if she gets bored and cry at the shop so i end up buying the wrong one. i was happy to hear about your bra bus but even if i want to join, i've got work in the morningfrom 7-1pm but i'm already up by 5am to catch the train to subiaco where my work is in MercyCare.
lucky for those you had help. hopefully i can go to one of them in the near future. I always listen to your morning show -the em and wipper show- on my mobile even when going to work and it keeps me company for my morning walk. love hearing you on the radio. take care...thanks

I am a Bra Fitter at a Bra store near my home. You'd be really suprised how many ladies do come in and they are actually 2-3 sizes wrong. Once i am finished, they walk out of the fitting rooms feeling like new people, because of all this new comfort. I got fitted on my first shift at the store, and i was wearing a bra that was a C cup, when they finished measuring me, i was a DD.. big difference huh?? Good on ya Em for taking the girls out on a Bra spree. Girls, go get fitted, seriously- its not worth the pain.
