Panda Fakes Pregnancy To Get Treats
Life as a pregnant panda is apparently, very, very good!
Officials had to call off the live broadcast of a panda giving birth because, well, she was faking it.
Ai Hin, a 6-year-old giant panda living at Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Centre in China, had been displaying pregnancy symptoms for two months.
But it turns out she was actually having a “phantom pregnancy”, where a female animal appears to be pregnant - but isn't.
Why? Well the Chinese state news agency, Xinhua, has reported it was just an easy way to get more treats.
Pregnant pandas apparently have a pretty sweet life living in China’s breeding centres – their own site, air con, around the clock care and a generous supply of buns, fruit and bamboo.
"So some clever pandas have used this to their advantage to improve their quality of life," panda expert Wu Kongju told Xinhua.
Some scientists dispute this, saying it's related to the giant panda's notoriously low reproductive rate - but we like the treats line!
