Man Has Been Collecting All His Nail Clippings In A Jar Since 1978!
Richard Gibson has a jar containing every single toenail and fingernail he clipped off himself since February 1978… and he couldn’t be prouder.
The jar is the 58-year-old American oil investor’s most prized possession and he even keeps it on a shelf in his Louisiana home.
One day 36 years ago, he decided to put the clippings in the box of his manicure kit instead of throwing them away.
"I started doing it again and again and then decided to see how long it would take to fill the box," he said proudly.
It took two years to fill the box and then he was so hooked that he continued to do it, moving on to the glass jar he currently uses.
"I have no idea how many nails are in the jar," Gibson said. "It's well into the thousands."
Gibson’s commitment to the bizarre collection hasn’t always been easy though, in fact his ex wife would insist he hid the jar when visitors came to the house.
But his persistence has finally paid off. Gibson and his nail clippings will appear in the new Ripley's Believe It Or Not! book.
"I haven't told her," he said. "I'm waiting until I can show her the book. She's always been annoyed by them."
Gibson estimates the jar to be 99% full but hasn’t yet decided what to do when he completely runs out of room.
"I don't know what I'll do," he said. "I'll probably put them into something else. I've got enough room for several more months worth of nails."
