Man’s Incredible Fundraising Mission For Neonatal Illnesses
To mark 10 years since the death of his ex girlfriend’s six and a half week old son, a man has set himself an extremely challenging goal to raise money for charity.
Mitch Blain, from Airlie Beach in Queensland, says that his ex’s little boy Seth Xavier was born with gastroschisis and explains the complications involved on his Facebook page, Mitch's Hair-raiser. Salute to Seth:
“They operated on him but due to complications during the operation he wasn't left with enough bowel. We watched him turn from a healthy boy to a skeleton as his body shut down on him, skin colour changing, losing colour in his iris in his eyes and his body not even able to heal where they had stitched his stomach and it remained partly opened.”
Clearly affected by the experience, Mitch is now planning to go 365 days without cutting his hair, shaving, smoking and drinking to raise money for research and medicine to prevent neonatal illness and deaths like Seth’s.
All money raised will go to the Mater Foundation, who help purchase life-saving medical equipment, improve patient care and ensure their research teams continue to find better ways to diagnose, treat and ultimately cure life-threatening diseases.
He even set penalties for if he fails at any of the challenges: $100 a month for each month remaining in the year.
His last Facebook post was on June 24 and after 175 days of the “hair-raiser”, he’s raised $5800.
Let’s hope he keeps going! Follow Mitch on his incredible journey and support him here.
