Medical Journal Of Australia

A 55-year-old Australian man has been left with an inch-wide hole in the head after using ointment he believed would treat his skin cancer.

The man from Brisbane, used Black Salve ointment for four months as an alternative medicine treatment which left him with a huge hole on his right temple.

He didn't seek medical help until a black hole appeared, and had been using pain relief medication.

Black Salve is known in many countries for it's corrosive properties, but is still used on moles, scars and skin cancerous lumps.  It works by destroying skin tissue and leaves a black scar, which in time will fall off.

The ointment has been condemned by the Therapeutic Good Administration, but isn't banned for use in Australia.
