REVIEW: Rihanna's Perth Concert - First Australian Show
Rihanna kicked off the Australian leg of her long awaited Diamonds World Tour at The Perth Arena last night and there was only one word to describe it – party.
Coming out in a black veil, a minimal set and a new black ‘mullet’ style hairdo Rihanna blared her hit ‘Mother Mary’ sitting in the centre of the stage, before the screens lit up in a white Greek style pillars where RiRi busted into the latest and perhaps less known hits off her new album.
The first 20 minutes of the show were a showcase of the RnB tracks off her new album Unapologetic which had the crowd feeling sexy just as their girl on stage – turning a tad Miley on us, RiRi crotch grabbed and twerked her way through songs with the crowd singing along, it’s not even my birthday but you want to lick my icing off.
25-year-old Robyn Rihanna Fenty showed a touch of her Barbadian roots going reggae and asking Perth fans, “Whatcha’ll know about this reggae sh*t?” before getting the crowd involved with a remix of Ginuwine’s Pony. A countdown on the big screen throughout the chorus let to fire being set off on stage – that’s when the show started.
It’s no wonder tabloids have raved about the pop star’s Diamonds World Tour – RiRi has swag. Rude Boy and What’s My Name had fans up dancing, singing along and was a reminder of why we all once fell in love with Rihanna’s infectious catchy sound and why we are fascinated with her as an artist.
There were whispers around that Rihanna wasn’t doing ‘enough’ singing throughout the show, rather focusing on her choreography. Although her latest hit What Now was very popular with fans, Rihanna turned to them for help – when really we wanted to hear her belt out those two words.
Thanks for the feedback!
Besides the criticism of just how much Rihanna put into her vocals, she should be credited for the way she interacted with her fans.
Throughout the 2 hour set, she showered them with love referring to us as her “Ossies” before getting into her first International hit Umbrella. Her connection with the crowd would not have been possible without the support from her back up vocalists who carried the songs for Rihanna who rather focused on her dancing and getting the ‘party’ started.
In a stunning red gown, after a short break Rihanna belted out her hit made famous with Eminem Love the Way You Lie and with the help of the crowd her hit from 2008, Take A Bow.
RiRi told fans at the Perth Arena, “Australia I f***ing missed you man… I forgot how rats*** you were,” before the beat of Fell in Love dropped and instantly the mood lifted and it was one big nightclub party. Running through the crowd, Rihanna got into some of her biggest dance hits Only Girl, Please Don’t Stop the Music and S&M.
Fans weren’t left too long waiting for an encore; they knew exactly what was missing. In a sparkling blue playsuit RiRi powered through her ballad Stay and ended with hit which inspired the name of the tour Diamonds.
It’s no wonder Rihanna has sold over 41 million albums worldwide, her fans love her and she knows how to win their love too. I walked in sceptical, walked out a fan – ok, so there was points in the show where she allowed the crowd to carry the vocals along with her back-up singers but to have the connection with her fans and such amazing stage prescence, I think she got away with it.
It was one night only in Perth and RiRi turned it up telling fans “The rest of Australia’s really gonna have to bring it cos you are top f***ing notch”
She plays in Adelaide, then Brisbane before rounding up with two shows in Melbourne and Sydney.
