ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Co-Founder Drowns
Tragic Death from Ice Bucket Co-Founder
Just two days after raising $100,000 USD to fight ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), 27-year-old co-founder of the ‘ALS Ice Bucket Challenge’ Corey Griffin tragically drowned.
Griffin was on Nantucket Island continuing to raise funds and awareness when the tragedy occurred. He had drowned when he dived into the water from the ‘Juice Guys’ building Boston Globe reported - a long tradition on the island.
Officials classified the drowning as accidental, the charity event was cancelled after Griffin’s death.
Close family friend Steve Greeley spoke of the reaction to Griffin’s death “The outpouring has been tremendous.”
Corey Griffin helped turn the Ice Bucket Challenge into a social media craze for the charity ALS - which has roped in superstar celebrities to pour ice water over their heads to raise awareness for charity.
Corey’s father - Robert Griffin - spoke of his son’s intention to help his friend Peter Fretes who had suffered with the incurable disease “He was so happy to be able to help him”.
