Mass evacuations are underway along the coast of Chile after a huge earthquake.

The 8.2 tremor has sparked tsunami warnings with several large waves have already been reported.

Peru and Ecuador are also on red alert while a tsunami watch is in effect across half a dozen countries including Panama, Costa Rica and El Salvador.

The quake struck at 8:46pm (10:46am AEDT) and was centred 83 kilometres northwest of Iquique on Chile's northern coast.

Waves of two metres have already struck cities on the coast with fears that bigger waves are on the way.

"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicentre within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.
