Liberal leader, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has introduced a bill to parliament today to enable a public vote on same-sex marriage.

The Prime Minster told MPs society would be stronger if more people were married.

The Prime Minister reminded them the plebiscite was a coalition election commitment they should support as it was “thoroughly democratic”.

Mr Turnbull said he would be voting “Yes” in the February 11 poll.

The plebiscite has faced heavy opposition from the public due to the proposed $15m of taxpayer money to be split between the “Yes” and “No campaigns.

It's suggested Opposition parties will block the bill.

While the plebiscite will cost an estimate $160 million to run the results are not binding.
