A mysterious English-speaking homeless girl in Rome who made international news this week has been identified.

The girl was spotted living rough on the streets of Rome, with locals noting that she always spoke English and did not seem to know Italian.

Internet sleuths believed that the girl could possibly be Madeleine McCann, who went missing in 2007. Commenters also suggested she could be Leela McDougall or Amanda Adlai.

However she has now been identified after Tahvo Jauhojärvi confirmed that the girl was actually his daughter Embla Jauhojärvi. Embla is 21-years-old and from Sweden.

"She had been missing for six months at least now. I knew she went to Italy to study the Italian language several months ago," Mr Jauhojärvi told The Sun.

"She stopped contacting everyone, any family, she just wanted to break away and start her own life because she has Asperger’s as well.

"I have contacted the Swedish police and they have contacted Interpol and they have contacted the Swedish embassy in Rome so I can get her home – and I hope she’ll want to go home.

"She’s looking like a bag lady, homeless, and she doesn’t have any belongings, no clothes, any cellphone. She could have been in some kind of shock, I don’t know what she’s done there or what has happened to her. I don’t want to think about this."

The website Missing Persons of America brought attention to Embla's case after launching a campaign to get her home for Christmas. At the time they did not know what country she was originally from.

In a post on their website they wrote, "

This has to be one of the most amazing cases because of how one woman in Rome, Lorena Kollobani, send a photo and request to Missing Persons of America in San Diego, California and from there it joined people together internationally as everyone tried to find shelter and help for this young woman."
