X Men Origins: Wolverine Posted by Dennis McDougall 29 April, 2009 - 12:12 PM
X Men Origins: WolverineStarring Hugh Jackman, Liev Shreiber, Lynn Collins and Ryan Reynolds.
X Men Origins: Wolverine sees Aussie star Hugh Jackman reprise the role that catapulted him to superstardom. The film goes back in time to trace the journey of the young Logan to his emergence as self-healing mutant with the razor sharp claws.
Logan’s abilities are recognised by the US military and he, with his mutant brother Victor (Liev Shrieber), is recruited for a special mission. When the assignment takes Logan to places he does not morally support he walks away on the team to live the quiet life.
His quiet life is shattered by the murder of his lover Kayla (Lynn Collins) and starts him on a journey of revenge which brings him head to head with his brother Victor (Liev Shreiber), otherwise known as Sabretooth. The sibling rivalry turns out to be the most compelling part of this back story which really struggles to cut to the core of Wolverine’s story.
Origins has been promoted as a comprehensive unveiling of the mysterious Wolverine. Unfortunately, it seems the back story has just been used as a convenient excuse to bring one of the franchises most popular characters back to the big screen.
Fans of the franchise will no doubt be thankful, as will many a young teenage boys looking for a big, dumb, action flick. The fights scenes of the film are phenomenal and the special effects have taken the franchise to another level.
The film does introduce a number of characters new to the big screen including Gambit, Bolt and John Wraith, all of whom have abilities quite unique to mutants from past films. Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) seems the character most likely to receive his own Origins film, his sword play in one of the film's most integral scenes conjures images of Neo dodging bullets in The Matrix.
With such a promising premise it is a shame Origins fails to deliver on its promise as a journey into the soul of the tortured anti-hero. Perth boy Troye Sivan is highly believable as the young Wolverine but his performance is incredibly fleeting.
Origins will draw huge crowds of young men through the cinema turnstiles and very few will be disappointed. Those looking for a little more smarts to go with their popcorn will feel short changed. For girls grimacing at the thought enduring two hours of comic-book adaptation there is enough topless Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds to keep even the most uninterested moviegoer happy.
Three out of Five Stars.
