Movie Review: The X-Files

Starring David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Billy Connelly
Mulder and Scully. One of the biggest television phenomenon's of the Nineties. The antics of the two F.B.I investigators were "must see TV." for five of The X-Files nine season's. I must confess I was an avid fan, even staying on after Duchovny had left the show and it petered out with more of a whimper than a bang (unless you count the one between Mulder and Scully). Legal wrangling between Chris Carter, the shows creator and Fox studios kept the follow up to 1998's movie on ice. Until now.
X-Files: I Want To Believe tries to walk a very fine line between a stand alone film and one only for the fans (or X-Philes as we like to be called.) and it almost pulls it off. It is a taut, psychological thriller that's quite dark in places, with Mulder and Scully hunting things that go bump in the night for the F.B.I. in return for a full pardon for Mulder. Scully initially talks Mulder into helping the bureau but gradually regrets returning to the dangers of the files kept in the basement.
Fans will be glad to hear that Mulder and Scully are in great form. Right from the start their banter is witty and even after six years the chemistry is still there. There are plenty of knowing nods to the show (Mulder still eats sunflower seeds and Scully is still hot and still doesn't buy any of Mulders theories) with enough action and twists to keep every one in the cinema whose never heard of The Lone Gunman or Alex "Ratface" Krychek entertained and not too confused.
As a super fan of the show I'll admit I was a little under whelmed with the new movie. Dont get me wrong, it's great to see my two favourite agents go at a fresh new x files story and I think that this movie should do well enough to ensure a series of paranormal adventures. The plot, however, is just a little lack lustre and I am sure that fans will agree that there are episodes that are better than this film. All in all though this is a great return to the screen for agents Scully and Mulder. Billy Connelly is great as an is-he-or-isn't-he psychic, Amanda Peet is always good to watch and rapper X-ibit has a fine turn as Agent Mosley Drummy even if he looks like he should be arrested by the F.B.I. not working for them. Hopefully it won't be as long before we see the x files back on a screen again.
QUOTABLE NOTABLES:
Scully: I didn't bugger 34 alter boys!
Mulder:Scully!
Scully: Well I have other words I could have used
Mulder: I'm sure that you do…..
Mulder: whats up doc?
