Movie Review: Get Smart Posted by Stav 25 June, 2008 - 1:35 PM

Get Smart

Staring: Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin

Another week, another remake of a classic! So what sets Get Smart apart from your Dukes of Hazards or your Bewitcheds? One, the source material. Get Smart the original series still stands up today as a funny, funny show, and B. the inspired casting of Steve Carell (Officially the funniest man in America) as agent 86.

The movie is essential an origin story for Maxwell Smart, beginning with him not as an agent but an analyst desperate to become a spy. Due to a Kaos attack on CONTROL headquarters however max is promoted to field agent quick smart, (pardon the pun) and the fun really starts.

Keeping all the elements that made the show such a success and adding a few naughties updates this was a movie that never made me cry with laughter but did have me giggling through out the entire film. Anne Hathaway kicks serious but as agent 99, and provides a great straight man for Carells tomfoolery. In fact, every member of the cast is an inspired choice from Alan Arkin as the long suffering chief to Patrick Warburton from TV's Rules Of Engagement who would have to of  been the only choice for hymie the robot.
Funny, fast and tightly directed by comedy veteran Peter Segal, Get Smart is a great film that suffers slightly from the inevitable Austin Powers/Naked Gun comparisons although I think Don Addams would be proud.

Quotable Notables:
MAX: Are you thinking what I'm thinking chief?
CHIEF: Yes, if you were thinking "oh s#$t oh s$%t a swordfish nearly went through my head..."

4 Wookies out of 5

I saw the movie last night and thought that it was better than what critics were saying, not as good as the tv show but I still enjoyed it...

    Anne Hathaway? - YESS!
    Steve Carell? - NOOO!

Anne Hathaway was a modernized and BETTER version of the old agent 99.

Steve Carell was a crappy imitation. I would have LOVED it a whole lot more if he got the catchphrases right.

    They didn't.
