Ben Cousins described his recent sleeping tablet scare as a ‘big wake-up call’ when he fronted the media for the first time since the early-week drama.

Cousins was rushed to the Epworth Hospital on Monday due to an adverse reaction to a cocktail of substances which included sleeping tablets, caffeine and alcohol.

The Richmond veteran explained that the serious situation was sparked by consuming the wrong dosage of prescription sleeping tablets.

The Richmond Football Club have confirmed that Ben Cousins has been sedated and is being treated in the intensive care ward at Epworth Hospital. Cousins is said to be in a stable condition.

At this stage there is nothing to suggest that any illicit substances were involved in Cousins' hospitalisation.

Controversial AFL star Ben Cousins is reportedly in intensive care after "an adverse reaction to a sleeping tablet."

At around 11:45am Cousins was admitted to Melbourne's Epworth Hospital after the sleeping tablet was said to be causing stomach pains.

His club the Richmond Tigers are set to make further statements once Cousins' condition is better known.

Cousins' career has had its share of highs and lows, winning premierships and accolades on the field, and damaging incidents off-field with recreational drugs.
